How Long Does Each Thatch Material Last?
So, you’re looking for thatch materials with both performance and functionality, but where to start?! Here, we look at the lifespan of each thatch material to educate your decision.

Africa Roofing supply six different types of thatch materials – comprised of a mix of natural and simulated materials
As you’d expect, the lifespan between natural and synthetic thatch will vary and approximate projections can depend on the variables involved including:
- Installation techniques
- Geographical location
- Humidity
- Wind
- Rain
- Wildlife
- Plants or trees in close proximity
Generally thatch performs better when placed in an open area with no surrounding trees, with wind and sunlight to fully dry and air the thatch materials.
When placed in an area with surrounding trees and plants, the debris may land on natural thatch and affect the lifespan of natural thatch materials. No effect will occur on synthetic thatch.

Cape Reed – Natural Thatch – 5-6 years
Cape reed is naturally waterproof and once piled on top of one another as done when roofing, creates an impermeable material that won’t become waterlogged or seap into the interior.
Tropical Thatch – Natural Thatch – 5-6 years
Our tropical thatch is again a natural product from the same material as Cape Reed but uses the flower and seed part of the reed for a rustic look. 99% waterproof and is very aesthetically pleasing – lasts longer when used for indoor installations.
Fibre Thatch – Simulated Thatch – Minimum 50 years
Fibre thatch is a simulated UPVC thatch, waterproof, UV protected, not susceptible to rot or decay, also not a material that wildlife may choose to nest. Debris from nearby trees and plants will have no effect on the lifespan. No maintenance required.
Fibre Palm – Simulated Thatch – Minimum 50 years
Fibre palm is a synthetic thatch with a tropical appearance available in two colourways – Bali & Makuti. Fully waterproof and not susceptible to rot or decay. Debris from nearby trees and plants will have no effect on the lifespan No maintenance required.
Combination Thatch – Natural Underlay with Synthetic Thatch – 8-12 years
Natural thatch with an artificial overlay makes this thatch type 100% waterproof.
